WITH JESUS, THERE IS TOMORROW: A YOUTH-LED SENAKULO IN QUIAPO

Apr. 13, 2026 07:30 PM

Quiapo, Manila — The Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, once again becomes more than a place of worship during Holy Week—it transforms into a living stage of faith, memory, and devotion through its annual Senakulo.

This sacred Lenten tradition, which dramatizes the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, continues to speak powerfully to generations of devotees. But this year, what made it especially moving was not only the story being told—but the young people who courageously brought it to life.

The presentation opened in a quiet and respectful atmosphere with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, followed by a doxology that immediately set a peaceful, reflective atmosphere. In his opening message, parish priest-rector Rev. Fr. Jade Licuanan emphasized a timely and comforting reminder:

“Huwag kang matakot, may bukas pa with Jesus.” (Do not be afraid, there is still a tomorrow with Jesus.)

His words echoed through the audience—to believe that even in moments of suffering, fear, and uncertainty, Christ remains present and faithful.

This year’s Senakulo was led and performed largely by young members of the parish, particularly from Parich Youth Ministry. At the center of the performance was Charles Maanyag, who portrayed Jesus with quiet intensity and sincerity, offering a portrayal rooted not in grandeur, but in compassion and sacrifice.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated production team worked tirelessly to ensure that every scene carried emotional weight and spiritual clarity. From direction, choreography, lighting, costumes, and sound design, each detail reflected a shared commitment: to make faith visible, relatable, and alive for today’s generation.

Unlike traditional retellings that focus strictly on the Passion narrative, this year’s Senakulo introduced a more contemporary layer—a story of a child witnessing a father’s moral struggle and eventual fall into temptation.

In a deeply human turn, Jesus enters the narrative not only as Savior, but as guide and restorer—teaching, correcting, and ultimately calling the father back toward redemption.

It is a storyline that resonates beyond the stage. It reflects the quiet battles many families face: brokenness, poor choices, and longing for healing. And within that struggle, Christ is portrayed as present—not distant but deeply involved in the process of transformation.

Director Jerk San Jose shared that the focus of the production was not perfection in acting, but sincerity in storytelling and movement. Since the performers are youth participants, the process became a formation journey in itself—shaped by workshops, discipline, and a gradual understanding of the sacred story they were embodying.

The Senakulo became less of a performance and more of a pilgrimage—where learning, faith, and service intersected on stage.

Beyond the lights, costumes, and choreography, the Senakulo of Quiapo Church offers a simple yet profound reminder: no one carries their cross alone.

In a world marked by anxiety, pressure, and uncertainty, the message of Christ’s Passion remains timeless suffering is real, but so is hope. Failure is possible, but so is redemption. And even in moments of darkness, there is always a path back to grace.

What made this year’s Senakulo truly remarkable was not only its narrative depth, but its living testimony: that faith is not confined to tradition alone—it is continually renewed by the youth who choose to serve, create, and believe.

Through their efforts, the story of Christ was not just remembered. It was experienced.

And in that experience, the faithful were reminded once again: with Jesus, there is always tomorrow.
