As the New Year dawned at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, it also marked the beginning of the most spiritually intense season for devotees—the journey toward Nazareno 2026. On January 3, 2026, thousands of Catholic faithful from different parts of the country gathered at Plaza Miranda for the annual Replica Blessing of Jesus Nazareno Images and Estandarte’s, one of the most significant pre-Nazareno activities that unites communities and individual devotees in prayer and devotion.

This annual gathering once again provided an opportunity for devotees and pilgrims to present their cherished images of the Black Nazarene for blessing—an act deeply rooted in thanksgiving, fulfilled vows (panata), and heartfelt petitions for the year ahead.

The rites began at 1:30 in the afternoon and were presided over by Most Rev. Dave Capucao, Bishop of the Prelature of Infanta, together with the clergy and religious brothers of Quiapo Church. The liturgical procession and blessing extended into the evening, concluding at around 8:30 p.m. Throughout the ceremony, priests reverently blessed countless replicas brought by church-accredited Balangays as well as by individual devotees who patiently waited for hours to take part in the sacred rite.

Based on church sources and crowd estimates from previous years, organizers approximated that 30,000 to 35,000 devotees participated in the event. The number steadily increased as the day progressed, reaching its peak in the evening as more pilgrims arrived at the basilica grounds to join the blessing.

An atmosphere of fun-festive and happiness filled Quezon Boulevard and nearby streets as devotees held their replicas high—visible expressions of faith, hope, and total surrender to the Lord. For many, the moment was both deeply personal and profoundly communal, as prayers rose together in one voice, reflecting the enduring strength of Filipino devotion to Jesus Nazareno.

In his homily, Bishop Capucao offered a powerful reflection that resonated deeply with the faithful, reminding them of the true meaning of devotion and discipleship. In the final and most stirring part of his exhortation, he said:
“Ang Poong Jesus Nazareno ay nakaluhod hindi dahil Siya ay talo, kundi dahil Siya ay nagpapakumbaba upang tayo ay itayo. Nawa ang ating debosyon ay hindi lamang maging emosyon, kundi isang patuloy na pagbabago ng ating kuwento—mula sa pagiging makasarili tungo sa pagiging tunay na anak ng Diyos na handang magpasan ng krus para sa iba.” (Poong Jesus Nazareno kneels not because He is defeated, but because He humbles Himself in order to lift us up. May our devotion not be merely an emotion, but a continuing transformation of our story—from self-centeredness to becoming true children of God, ready to carry the cross for others.)

The bishop’s words underscored that while the images are treasured symbols of devotion, the heart of the Nazareno devotion is ultimately lived out through Christ-like virtues—humility, compassion, forgiveness, perseverance, and self-giving love. The blessing was marked by fervent prayers, the sprinkling of holy water, and moments of silence that allowed devotees to internalize the grace of the occasion.

Ensuring the safety and smooth flow of the event were volunteers, members of the Hijos del Nazareno, and church safety teams, who worked tirelessly to maintain order and assist the growing crowd. Their coordinated efforts allowed the faithful to participate in the rite with spirited and peace.

As the blessing concluded, devotees slowly made their way home, carrying with them renewed spiritual purpose, strengthened faith, and deeper confidence in God’s providence. The 2026 Replica Blessing of Jesus Nazareno Images and Estandarte’s once again affirmed a living tradition—one that continues to unite Hijos, Balangays, and individual devotees in a shared journey of faith, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno.
