On February 6, 2023, the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, spearheaded by the Disaster Preparedness & Response Ministry (DPRM) provided disaster relief assistance to more than 46 families and other displaced individuals who were victims of the recently concluded fire outbreak in the residential area of #39 Clemente St., Barangay San Agustin, Novaliches, Quezon City, last February 4, 2023.
Mr. Mark Joseph Verdadero led the relief operation, DPRM Supervisor, together with Mr. Jaime Paulo Grafil, DPRM Staff. In addition, other Quiapo Church personnel participated in this activity: Mr. Jesmon Catacutan of the Social Services and Development Ministry (SSDM) and Mr. Kidanzac Tallada of the Ecumenism / Interreligious, & Research Ministry. Food packs were efficiently distributed to those affected families evacuated in Bahay Pangarap, located near the burned-down residential area. This relief operation was done in cooperation with the Social Services Development Department officials of Quezon City. Also, it included exposure to the aftermath of that incident, which involved the loss of properties and damaged households, to understand better the current plight the community experienced.
Beyond the success of this operation and understanding the dynamics of every disaster and the humanitarian relief efforts that follow, the core of true acts of charity is recognizing the need for commitment and compassion when helping the poor, homeless, displaced, and marginalized. Especially during times of crisis, embracing the struggles of the needy will make us respond to them with unconditional acts of love and mercy, like how our Nuestro Padre Hesus Nazareno will always be for everyone who seeks Him in these trying times.
