QUIAPO CHURCH JOYFULLY CELEBRATES THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST, PATRON OF THE PARISH

Jun. 29, 2026 08:38 PM

QUIAPO, MANILA, Philippines — On June 24, 2026, the City of Manila marked its 455th Founding Anniversary, a celebration that beautifully coincided with the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Parish of Saint John the Baptist—more popularly known as the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno (Quiapo Church).

For the faithful of Quiapo, the feast of St. John the Baptist is more than a parish celebration. It is a yearly reminder of the identity and mission entrusted to the parish since its foundation. While the Traslacion remains the largest religious gathering associated with Quiapo Church, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist holds a unique place in the hearts of its parishioners, for it honors the saint under whose patronage the parish has faithfully carried out its ministry for centuries.

The celebration reached its highest point with the Misa Mayor at 12:15 p.m., presided over by His Eminence, Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, Archbishop of Manila. Joining him at the altar were the priests of Quiapo Church together with visiting clergy, who concelebrated the Holy Eucharist before a church filled with devotees, parishioners, religious communities, and guests.

Present in the celebration were the parish’s dedicated employees, volunteers, ministries, lay organizations, and pastoral workers whose faithful service throughout the year reflects the living mission of the Church. Their participation highlighted the unity of the parish family as they gathered around the Eucharistic table to give thanks to God for the gift of their patron saint and to renew their commitment to serving Christ through the Church.

In his homily, Cardinal Advincula invited the faithful to look beyond the historical figure of St. John the Baptist and to recognize him as a model for Christian discipleship in today’s world. Reflecting on John’s life, the Cardinal emphasized that preparing the way for the Lord is not merely a mission of the past but a continuing vocation entrusted to every baptized Christian.

The Cardinal reflected on three defining virtues that characterized St. John the Baptist’s life: taking the lead in doing what is good, giving priority to Christ above oneself, and surrendering completely to God’s will.

He first spoke about taking the lead (pangunguna), explaining that authentic leadership begins not with authority or recognition but with initiative born out of love and responsibility. St. John the Baptist saw that many people had become spiritually complacent and had drifted away from God. Rather than remaining silent or assuming that someone else would address the situation, he courageously stepped forward to proclaim repentance and conversion. His willingness to act demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in concern for others and in a desire to bring them closer to God.

Cardinal Advincula challenged the faithful to imitate this same spirit in their daily lives. In a time when it is easy to criticize society, complain about problems, or simply wait for others to take action, he reminded everyone that Christians are called to become instruments of renewal. Every act of kindness, every effort to reconcile divided families, every gesture of honesty, forgiveness, and compassion becomes a way of preparing the path for Christ. Rather than asking who will begin the work of change, the Cardinal encouraged the faithful to become the first to act with generosity and faith.

The Cardinal then reflected on giving way to Christ (pagpapauna), describing it as one of the most beautiful characteristics of St. John the Baptist. Despite the admiration and influence he had gained among the people, John never sought personal glory. When Jesus began His public ministry, John willingly stepped aside and pointed everyone toward Christ, proclaiming, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” He did not cling to popularity or power, nor did he allow pride to overshadow his mission. Instead, he recognized that his role was simply to prepare hearts for the coming of the Savior.

Cardinal Advincula observed that the temptation to seek recognition remains present in every age. Whether in the family, the workplace, ministry, or even within the Church, people can sometimes desire appreciation more than faithful service. St. John the Baptist reminds believers that authentic greatness lies in directing attention not to oneself but to Christ. The Church fulfills its mission not by glorifying individuals but by leading people into a deeper encounter with Jesus.

Finally, the Cardinal reflected on the virtue of surrendering to God’s will (pagpapaubaya). Throughout his life, St. John the Baptist faithfully accepted God’s plan even when it demanded sacrifice, misunderstanding, and ultimately martyrdom. He trusted completely that God’s purpose was greater than his own ambitions. His famous words, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30), remain a timeless invitation for every Christian to place Christ at the center of life.

The Cardinal concluded by reminding the faithful that these three virtues—leading through service, giving way to Christ, and surrendering everything to God—remain essential marks of authentic Christian discipleship. Just as St. John the Baptist prepared the way for the Lord through humility, courage, and unwavering faith, Christians today are called to prepare the way for Christ in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities through lives that reflect the Gospel.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, the parish held its traditional Karakol Procession, a joyful and prayerful tribute to its patron saint. Accompanied by church personnel, parish ministries, organizations, and hundreds of devotees, the image of St. John the Baptist was carried through the streets surrounding Quiapo Church in an atmosphere of thanksgiving and praise. The procession became not only a public expression of devotion but also a visible witness of the unity of the parish family as they celebrated the birth of the one who prepared the way for the coming of the Lord.

As the feast concluded, the celebration served as a renewed invitation for every member of the Quiapo community to continue the mission of St. John the Baptist—to courageously proclaim Christ, to live humbly in His service, and to prepare the hearts of others for His presence. In a world longing for hope, truth, and compassion, the life of the parish’s patron remains a timeless example that authentic greatness is found not in being seen, but in faithfully leading others to Jesus Christ.
