MANILA, Philippines—The Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno conducted a two-session formation module entitled “True Devotion to Jesus Nazareno of Quiapo Church” at Basilica’s PBB Hall, guiding active members of the Hijos del Nazareno in deepening their understanding and practice of faith.
Facilitated by Mark Joseph G. Verdadero, the module sought to help participants reflect on the meaning of true devotion through the lens of Catholic doctrine, worship, and moral living. The session centered on the Gospel verse Matthew 16:24, “Whoever wishes to come to me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me,” which served as the foundation for understanding the call to discipleship.
Verdadero emphasized that genuine devotion requires both internal conversion and outward expression, inspiring believers to embody Christ’s humility, compassion, and patience in their everyday actions.
The discussion explored how the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno symbolizes the unity of faith and Filipino identity, portraying Jesus as a companion in suffering who brings hope and strength to the poor and weary. Participants examined the various forms of devotion such as the annual Traslación, the “Pahalik” or kissing of the image, and the weekly Friday Masses and Novenas held at Quiapo Church. Each ritual, according to the facilitator, reflects different dimensions of spiritual life; gratitude, petition, penance, and renewal, rooted in the Filipino expression of faith.
The formation concluded with a collective prayer of thanksgiving, reaffirming the faithful’s enduring relationship with Jesus Nazareno as a living symbol of hope, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in the heart of Manila.
According to Bro. Otep, it is very important that this kind of module be facilitated and followed so that Hijos may fully understand the true meaning of being a devotee. Verdadero also expressed hope that this formation would continue to spread —from the Hijos down to the balangays, strengthening the shared mission of faith.

Meanwhile, this module was presented at the RCAM Youth Ministry Seminar-Workshop on Module Making, titled “YOUMICOM 2025: Unshaken,” held at San Felipe Neri Catholic School on October 18, 2025. Verdadero received a certificate alongside youth participants from various dioceses within Manila.
