The Lenten journey formally began at Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, with the solemn and meaningful witnessing of the traditional burning of old palms on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
The sacred rite was presided over by Rev. Fr. Marion Brian Maquiraya, Parochial Vicar. Gathered within the church grounds were numerous devotees and faithful together with the help of Hijos Del Nazareno MBBN and CENTRAL, united in prayer and reflection as they prepared their hearts for the penitential season of Lent.

The burning of old palms, collected from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebrations, holds deep spiritual significance in the Catholic tradition. From these palms will come the ashes to be blessed and imposed on the faithful on Ash Wednesday- a powerful symbol of repentance, humility, and humanity’s call to conversion. As the palms were consumed by fire, the faithful were reminded of the transient nature of earthly life and the enduring call to return to God.
The atmosphere was solemn yet deeply communal. Devotees of Jesus Nazareno stood side by side, offering prayers and silently reflecting on the meaning of sacrifice, renewal, and faith. For many, witnessing this rite at Quiapo Church carries special importance, as the shrine remains a special home for countless Filipinos who turn to the Jesus Nazareno for strength and hope and a place where repentance and transformation happen.
As Lent begins, the burning of the old palms serves not only as liturgical preparation but also a spiritual invitation- calling the faithful to a season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. United as one community, the devotees of Jesus Nazareno embark once more on the Lenten journey, guided by faith, tradition, and a deep devotion to the Lord.
