On July 11, 2024, the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts headed by Sen. Loren Legarda, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian and Sen. Lito Lapid together with staff from the Department of Tourism, Culture & Arts of Manila (DTCAM), barangay officials and the media commenced the ‘Quiapo Walking Tour’ at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno. The said tour was organized by the Quiapo ng Puso Ko, a cultural and heritage conservation group, of which Mr. Alfrein O. Quirionez, head of the Quiapo Silsilah Office.
The tour kickstarted with the delivery of welcome remarks by Rev. Fr. Rufino C. Sescon Jr., rector and parish priest. Going inside the church, Mr. Kidanzac A. Tallada of the Shrine and Pilgrims ministry gave an overview of the history of the church and its relevance to the Filipino culture and religiosity.
The activity tour served as ocular inspection aimed to explore and understand the significance of preserving notable heritage and cultural landmarks within Quiapo district such as the Quiapo church, Manila Golden Mosque and Cultural Center, Bahay Nakpil-Bautista, San Sebastian church, Quinta Market and more sites. This is under the Senate Bill 2324 or the Quiapo Heritage Zone Act with the hopes of this being passed.
